Spi Ouest 2021
Spi Ouest was a great success and I am very proud of our performance as a team over the past week. I firstly want to thank the boys, Alex, Andy and James for their hard work on the water, we collectively worked well to get a great result in our first regatta in the Figaro 3. Secondly I would like to thank my dad (Paul) for being a helpful hand on the shore and running around after us while we were out racing. Another massive thank you to Marcus Hutchinson for letting us use the boat and Steve at Technique Voile for the guidance on this regatta.
The initial arrival to the race and motoring into La Trinite Sur Mer was really a dream come true, having wanted to skipper a Figaro right from an early age when the Solitaire came to Plymouth in 2014. This is where I first became involved with the race and since then I’ve aspired to compete like I am today. Arriving next to some big names in sailing, such as, Armel Le Cleac’h and Pierre LeBoucher was a good way to reflect on the journey sailing has taken me on in the last few years.
Day 1 started with a light, shifty breeze and gave us the first chance to line up against our competitors, coming out of the gate better than we thought, with 9th in the first race. This was a slight shock to us as we were the only boat in the fleet who hasn’t has their boat to train all year. Race 2 and 3 didn’t go so well, giving us areas of improvements going into race day 2. We really worked hard in the evening to make sure we didn’t continue with the bad results and came out much strong in day 2, culminating with a 5th place in one of the races, really showing that we were learning from previous days. The improvements carried on into day 3, producing consistent results through the two races that day. Overall we tied for 11th place and came out 12th. I think with a little bit more training we really could have been knocking on the doors of those on the top of the leaderboard.
I am now back in the U.K. feeling grateful for the past week and thinking about future steps with my sailing. Sailing the Figaro is definitely the future for me and I am working really hard now to get everything in place to allow this dream to become a reality.
Thank you all so much for following and hope to be able to give some more news soon!
